The effects of adult education are self-evident and well-documented. For the individuals concerned, the increased knowledge or skill in a particular subject is only one result of the learning process. In addition education can give the adult student greater confidence and enhanced self-esteem which may well have implications for all areas of their lives.

The Active Ageing Framework has been adapted as a global strategy in ageing policies, practices and research over the last decade. Lifelong learning, however, has not been fully integrated into this discourse. An analytical framework was developed based on the literature of old-age vulnerabilities and the benefits of lifelong learning.
